Brian TerhorstKVMR's General Manager, Brian Terhorst, arrived at the station as an office volunteer in the Fall of 1991. New to Nevada County, Brian saw volunteer service as a great way to make friends and do something valuable on his day off. He enrolled in the Broadcaster Training Class of 1992 "just for fun," and completed the course with fellow broadcasters, Michael Keene, Alice MacAllister, Chris Towne, George Olson, and Jenny Michaels.

Broadcasting only fueled Brian's volunteer involvement at KVMR; he committed a full day each week in the business office helping with membership, underwriting, program scheduling, volunteered as the station's Volunteer Coordinator and served two terms on the Program Committee. In 1994, Brian joined the paid office staff as its first dedicated Membership Coordinator. Within a year, Brian had grown his position to full time, adding responsibilities as KVMR's Events Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator. After having dabbled in nearly every aspect of the station's operations, Brian was hired as KVMR's General Manager in 1996.

As with many of our broadcasters, KVMR fulfilled one of Brian's lifelong fantasies to be a radio dj. Entranced with music since his boyhood in Virginia, Brian is classically trained in music and played soprano, alto and bass clarinet in four different bands in high school. With designs of pursuing music as a career, Brian moved to California in 1979 where Proposition 13 had dismantled most of the school music programs.

After graduating in 1981, Brian enrolled in college in the Bay Area, earning an Associate's Degree in Natural Science. He transferred to Sonoma State University where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology. He completed his graduate studies at SSU, with coursework at UC Berkeley, in Cultural Resources Management and Architectural History.

From 1986 to 1991, Brian was a consulting Archaeologist and Architectural Historian working for SSU, Caltrans, The California State Office of Historic Preservation and as a private consultant. A contract with the Placer County Department of Museums brought him to the Foothills where he led an inventory of over 650 historic and prehistoric properties in Placer County. As a private consultant, Brian recorded the historic Loma Rica Ranch property in Nevada County and prepared the nomination for the Miners Foundry Cultural Center as a California Historical Landmark.

Brian's growing disenchantment with the bureaucracy of the preservation industry, coupled with the slow progression of Muscular Dystrophy, led him to explore the career change that brought him to the staff of KVMR in 1996. "While the community radio world is nothing like my life in consulting," Brian observes, "the anthropology background has served me every day I've been at KVMR. As different as we all seem, we're really all the same."

Brian is very proud of his time at KVMR and of its growth and maturity. Brian has been elected to two terms on the Board of Directors of the Bay Area-based National Federation of Community Broadcasters and has served multiple terms as the Board's Chair. Closer to home, Brian also serves on the Executive Committee of the Center for Non-profit Leadership, a collaborative of local public benefit organizations that fosters best practices.

Away from the station, Brian lives nearby with his wife, Amy. They share music, laughter, spirituality, a beautiful home and a blessed life. And they live happily ever after.
